Three days have been set aside for mourning by the governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in honor of those who lost their lives in the BRT rail disaster on Thursday morning.
Early on Thursday morning, a BRT staff bus carrying employees of the Lagos State government to the state secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja, was involved in a deadly collision with a train at the PWD Bus Stop.
Two people died at the scene and four others later passed away at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, when bus number 33, carrying 85 state government employees, was riding from Isolo to Alausa on Thursday morning at 7:30 am.
The driver attempted to make a risky turn at the PWD rail crossing but was slowed down by the approaching train, which towed it to another location.
In addition to declaring the suspension of all political campaigns and ordering half-day work for state employees commencing on Friday at 12pm, Governor Sanwo-Olu, who visited the victims at the hospital, also ordered the flag to be flown at half-mast.
At the hospital, 42 patients were discovered to have moderate injuries, 29 patients to have serious injuries, Eight patients have mild injuries, and Six people have been declared dead.
Both the Peoples Democratic Party’s Dr. AbdulAzeez Olajide Adediran, better known by his stage as Jandor, and the Labour Party’s Mr. Rhodes-Vivour visited the accident site, and Governor Sanwo-Olu commended them for doing so.
