The world 100m hurdles champion and world record holder, Tobi Amusan, has been nominated for the 2023 Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year award.
The 25-year-old world hurdles champion was named to the list, which was revealed by the organizers on Monday.
The award, which was established in 1999, is intended to recognize individuals and teams from the world of sports, as well as sporting achievements from the previous year.
Amusan is the first Nigerian to receive the honor.
Other contenders for the prize are Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, the US duo of Scottie Scheffler and Nathan Chen, and the Moroccan national team.
Amusan experienced a breakthrough year in 2022 when she became the first Nigerian woman to win a world championship after clocking a remarkable 12.06 seconds in the 110m hurdles final. However, the achievement was not recognized because of a strong in-race tailwind that was higher than permitted.
She furthered her achievement by winning a gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games before defending her Diamond League crown to cap off an outstanding campaign.
