The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria has thrown its weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State, describing the move as a crucial step in preventing further political instability.
Following an emergency meeting of ALGON’s National Executive and Board of Trustees in Abuja on Thursday, the BoT Chairman, Odunayo Ategbero, emphasized that the intervention was timely and necessary to maintain peace.
“If the President had not acted swiftly, the situation could have spiraled into something much worse, possibly even a civil war,” Ategbero stated.
“As major stakeholders in local government administration, we are deeply concerned because such crises ultimately affect the masses.”
According to him, the emergency measure is not intended to remove elected officials but to create space for dialogue and resolution.
“The President has not removed the governor or the legislature; he only suspended them for six months. This period provides an opportunity for warring factions to find common ground in the interest of the people of Rivers State,” he explained.
Addressing the ongoing push for local government autonomy, Ategbero revealed that members of the committee tasked with implementing the Supreme Court’s ruling on financial independence for local governments have faced pressure to stall the process.
“There have been significant efforts to delay the implementation due to personal interests and sentiments, but the committee has remained steadfast and patriotic,” he noted.
He further disclosed that local governments have been directed to open accounts with the Central Bank of Nigeria to facilitate direct funding for key projects.
“This is a major step forward. Once these accounts are operational, funds can be directly transferred for crucial developmental initiatives, including education,” Ategbero said.
Despite some challenges, he commended the committee for making steady progress.
“Yes, the process is ongoing, but when we see tangible results, we must acknowledge and support those driving the change,” he added.
Highlighting the significance of financial independence at the local level, Ategbero stressed that empowering local governments would enhance security, healthcare, and education services.
“Over 80% of Nigerians reside in local government areas. It is our duty to ensure they have access to better living conditions,” he stated.
ALGON reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for local government autonomy, underscoring the need for direct access to funds to drive developmental projects that benefit the grassroots population.
