The Minister of Housing, Arc Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, has stated that President Bola Tinubu plans to create new cities in Nigeria.
According to information obtained from the ministry’s website, the minister stated this in a meeting with the leadership of the Nigeria Institute of Builders.
He stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu wants to build new towns and give Nigerians access to livable housing.
“The administration of President Tinubu was desirous of creating cities nationwide, so there would be a need for collaboration with state governments for the acquisition of land in order to achieve that plan,” he said.
The minister emphasised that the expansion of housing infrastructure serves as a significant driver of economic advancement and contributes to the alleviation of poverty.
“President Tinubu was poised to grow the economy in a way that would lift about 100 million Nigerians out of poverty, and the surest way to do that would be by constructing affordable but liveable houses for Nigerians,” he added.
The Minister stated that the National Building Code required few changes and that the NIOB and other professional groups may be asked to review it and identify any ambiguities that need to be clarified.
In his response, the minister of national infrastructure and urban development, Arc Dangiwa, assured NIOB of his ministry’s cooperation and outlined the difficulties facing the housing sector, including rapid urbanisation, land use reform, a housing deficit, and a lack of quality and standardised housing, before noting that builders are in the best position to advise the Ministry on addressing these issues.
He also informed the NIOB that President Tinubu had ordered the Ministry of Housing to constitute a Housing Sector Restructure Committee in order to restructure the whole housing sector so that it could function properly.
