President Bola Tinubu has declined to sign a bill that proposed extending the retirement age of National Assembly staff to 65 years or 40 years of service.
According to The PUNCH, the current law mandates retirement at 60 years of age or after 35 years of service.
The bill, which initially passed the House of Representatives but faced opposition in the Senate, was eventually approved by both chambers before being sent to the President for assent.
In a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Tinubu explained his decision to reject the bill, citing thorough examination and consultations. “Upon careful consideration, I have chosen to withhold my assent to the bill,” Tinubu stated.
The President expressed his appreciation for the National Assembly’s efforts but emphasized that his decision was in line with constitutional powers.
“This decision is made under the powers vested in me by the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.
“I trust that this decision will be understood and accepted by all involved,” Tinubu concluded.
