President Bola Tinubu has expressed profound sadness over the passing of Prince Doyin Okupe, a seasoned politician, strategist, and medical doctor who played a significant role in Nigeria’s political and healthcare sectors.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information & Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the president extended his condolences to Okupe’s family, friends, and associates, acknowledging his impact on the nation’s governance.
Okupe, a native of Iperu-Remo in Ogun State, held several key positions in government, including Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to former President Goodluck Jonathan and Special Assistant on Media to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo.
His political career spanned over three decades, during which he served as the National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention and was actively involved in the United Nigeria Congress Party, the Peoples Democratic Party, and later the Accord Party, where he was the national leader.
He was also the Director-General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign for the 2023 elections.
Beyond politics, Okupe contributed to Nigeria’s medical sector as the co-founder of the Royal Cross Medical Centre in Lagos. He also ventured into health journalism as the publisher of Life Mirror, a newspaper focused on medical issues.
President Tinubu described Okupe as “a bold and articulate advocate for national development,” lamenting that his passing comes at a time when his experience and insights were still needed.
The president also commiserated with the government and people of Ogun State, particularly the Iperu-Remo community, acknowledging Okupe’s lasting influence on his home state.
