President Bola Tinubu has called for an urgent review of fuel transportation safety protocols following a devastating tanker explosion in Jigawa State that claimed over 100 lives.
The President, in a statement delivered by Vice President Kashim Shettima on Wednesday, expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims and pledged swift federal intervention.
“Our hearts go out to the families who have been shattered by this horrific incident,” Shettima said. “The Federal Government stands with the people of Jigawa, and we are mobilizing all available resources to support the injured and provide relief to those affected by this tragedy.”
The Vice President also announced the immediate deployment of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) personnel to the site of the explosion. “We are ensuring that the necessary support is provided to the victims as quickly as possible,” he added.
The statement, signed by presidential aide Stanley Nkwocha, highlighted the administration’s commitment to preventing future tragedies by strengthening fuel transportation safety regulations and increasing public awareness.
“As we grapple with this tragedy, we must also recognize the need for stronger safety measures. Every life is precious, and we must do all we can to prevent similar incidents in the future,” Shettima stressed.
Shettima also praised the swift response of first responders and medical personnel at the scene, describing their dedication as a reflection of “the very best of our national spirit.”
In light of the tragedy, the Vice President emphasized the importance of improving road safety across the country. He directed the National Council to set clear targets under the National Road Safety Strategy, ensuring collaboration between federal, state, and local authorities.
“Road safety is not just about policy—it is the lifeline connecting people across the nation. We must make it a priority to protect our citizens on the road,” Shettima concluded.
