President Bola Tinubu on Friday welcomed Nigerian-born American football star Moro Ojomo, who was part of the Philadelphia Eagles team that triumphed in Super Bowl LIX.
The meeting took place at the State House in Abuja.
Ojomo, who was born in Lagos but moved to the United States at the age of seven, was accompanied by his parents, Ololade and Bimbo, as well as his sister, Modele.
His visit to Nigeria follows his team’s recent victory in the National Football League (NFL) championship, where they secured a 40-22 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.
Upon arriving in Lagos earlier in the week, the 23-year-old defensive tackle spoke about how his Nigerian heritage has played a crucial role in shaping his career.
“I have a drive and motivation that stem from my upbringing as a Nigerian, and my passion for this country allows me to excel. Nigeria has helped me succeed on the biggest stage,” Ojomo stated.
He also acknowledged the increasing representation of Nigerians in the NFL and emphasized the potential of the sport as a platform for young athletes.
“It is everything when you look at the number of Africans, specifically Nigerians, in American football. The most important thing is giving our youths an opportunity to get into the sport. It is a pathway to education, high school and college degrees, and a means to put Nigeria on the global stage,” he added.
Encouraging young Nigerians to embrace opportunities, Ojomo urged them to believe in their abilities.
“Just believe you can do anything. I know Nigerians are great, and I believe you should take advantage of opportunities and not let anyone deter you,” he concluded.
