The decomposing body of an unidentified man was discovered on Sunday in the Makogi Obesere community of Magboro in the Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State, prompting the closure of many businesses and stores in the area.
It was learned that the odour from the corpse had driven many store owners and residents away despite efforts by locals to have the appropriate government officials pick it up.
It was discovered, amid concerns for the safety of the locals, that the community leaders in the region had previously spoken with the police departments in Makogi and Ibafo about the situation when the man began sleeping in the open and appearing ill.
The Chairman of Makogi South Community Development Area, Mr. Ishola David, expressed concern for the community’s environmental health in a Monday interview with journalists while pleading for help.
He said, “It all started about five days ago when we saw him wandering in the community. It was obvious he looked weak because he could not respond to questions. Some residents started giving him water with the hope that he would regain his strength.
“He started sleeping in an open place. We reported the matter to the Makogi Police Division and someone came from the station and took some pictures. We told them to come and do something about it. Despite the report, nothing has happened about it.”
The body had been laying there since Sunday, and a cement vendor who only went by the name Mrs. AKintunde stated she could not open her store due of the smell coming from the dead body.
She said, “I cannot open my shop because of the stench. I called 112. Somebody picked it up and told me they would come. They asked for the address. I gave them all the information. But nothing has happened since I made the call last night (Sunday).”
Efforts to obtain a reaction from, the Chairman of Obafemi Owode Local Government, Mr. Ogunsola Olarewaju, were unsuccessful. Nevertheless, an anonymous personal assistant to the chairman has indicated that the incident will be brought to the attention of the chairman.
As of the time this report was issued, there had been no response from the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Omolola Oduntola, on the inquiry made by Journalists.
