The Association of Inland Water Transporters in Taraba State has implemented a prohibition on boat travels and overloading at all jetties inside the state, as part of its initiatives to mitigate boat accidents.
In an interview conducted on Wednesday, the interim state chairman of the association, Alhaji Jidda Mayoreneyo, revealed this information at Mayoreneyo.
He said that overloading and nighttime travel were two main causes of boat accidents, and that avoiding them would lower the number of accidents.
The difficulty of nighttime rescue operations, he added, meant more lives were lost when boats sank.
He also disclosed that the National Inland Waterways Association had donated life vests for passenger use.
In addition, he mentioned that three different regions of the state had each received education campaigns on water safety from the National Emergency Management Agency, the National Inland Waterways Agency, and the fire service.
