At least six people have been killed in a renewed attack by suspected armed herders in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State.
The assault took place on Saturday at Tse Ugema Chul, Mbakesa, Ugbaam, a few kilometers from Zaki Biam, the headquarters of Ukum LGA.
A local resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told reporters that the number of casualties might be higher.
“So far, we have recovered seven bodies, but many people are still missing,” the resident said.
The violence reportedly erupted after local youths attempted to drive away cattle that had wandered onto their farmlands, destroying crops.
“As the youths were chasing the cattle away, gunmen who had been lying in ambush suddenly opened fire, killing some of them,” the source added.
Benue State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Catherine Anene, said she had yet to receive a report from Ukum regarding the incident.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Ukum LGA, Jonathan Modi, confirmed the attack but was too distressed to discuss it in detail.
“I just can’t talk about the issue,” Modi said. “I am in Zaki Biam right now, in pain over what happened. Even if the governor calls me to speak on the situation, I will tell him I can’t talk on the phone unless I see him face-to-face. Please understand, I’m in pain.”
