Multichoice, the parent company overseeing DStv, made an announcement on Wednesday, January 3, revealing that the widely-known satellite TV service will not broadcast the upcoming AFCON 2023 tournament.
A statement released by Multichoice clarified that SuperSport TV, under their umbrella, was unable to secure the broadcasting rights for the event.
This development leaves millions of viewers across Africa in a state of uncertainty, scrambling to find alternative means to access the continent’s premier football tournament.
The absence of AFCON 2023 from DStv’s programming comes as disappointing news for football enthusiasts who typically rely on the service to catch the thrilling action of the tournament.
The statement issued by Multichoice suggests that their subsidiary, SuperSport TV, encountered difficulties in securing the necessary broadcasting rights, leading to this unforeseen outcome for viewers in Africa relying on DStv for their sports content.
The statement reads: “SuperSport Channel will not broadcast the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 scheduled for January 13th – February 11th, 2-24, because the channel has not secured the rights to broadcast the tournament.
“However, AFCON 2023 games will be available through our partner broadcast stations on Free to Air channels.
“Multichoice Africa remains committed to ensuring football fans across Africa continue to enjoy unrivaled access to entertainment and football games available on DStv and GOtv platforms including, the Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, Zambian Super League, and many more of football’s most prestigious competitions.”
