Controversial Nigerian rapper, Darlington Achakpo, better known as Speed Darlington, has been freed from Kuje prison following two months of detention.
The news was shared by his lawyer, Stan Alieke, via Instagram, where he expressed appreciation for everyone who contributed to the rapper’s freedom.
In his words, “Delighted to announce that our client, Mr Darlington Achakpo Aka Speed Darlington (Akpi) has regained his freedom after two months of illegal incarceration.
“For the record, as his team of lawyers, we will be exploring every angle of the law to ensure that he gets justice for his fundamental human right which was deprived of him by the Nigerian Police Force and for the unfair/unjust treatment he was subjected to.
“Mr Achakpo extends his gratitude to everyone who threw in their support and Special thanks to my colleagues, Mr Marshal Abubakar Esq, Barr Deji Adeyanju, Barr Hamza Nuh, Barr David.”
Speed Darlington’s arrest occurred on November 27 during a performance in Owerri, Imo State.
Reports suggested it stemmed from a verbal attack he allegedly made against Afrofusion star Burna Boy, born Damini Ogulu.
In a video, Speed Darlington accused Burna Boy of having an improper relationship with American rapper P Diddy, who is currently facing legal issues in the U.S.
This led to Burna Boy filing a petition, which resulted in Speed Darlington being charged with defamation and cyberstalking on October 4.
The rapper’s release comes less than a week after the Federal High Court in Abuja granted him bail set at N20 million.
