Popular singer Darlington Okoye, better known as Speed Darlington, has been released on bail following his arrest last week.
Darlington was detained in Lagos and later transferred to Abuja after a defamation and cyberstalking complaint was filed by Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy.
The artist had been missing for three days, causing concern among his fans, before a video surfaced showing him in handcuffs.
Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju confirmed the arrest and revealed that Darlington’s detention was linked to allegations of defamation against Burna Boy.
Darlington had made controversial remarks about Burna Boy’s association with embattled US rapper Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, and questioned the legitimacy of Burna Boy’s Grammy win for the album Twice As Tall, which Diddy executive produced.
Darlington met his bail conditions at the police’s Intelligence Response Team in Abuja and was released into the custody of his lawyer on Tuesday evening.
In a post on X, Adeyanju praised the professionalism of the police involved in the case and thanked those who contributed to Darlington’s release.
Darlington’s mother, Queen, had earlier publicly pleaded for leniency from Burna Boy, urging him to show mercy in the legal matter.
