Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has instructed civil servants who hold positions as Local Government Secretaries to step down from their roles, citing that these appointments are politically oriented.
The directive was issued during a meeting on Monday with Local Government Sole Administrators and Secretaries from various areas in the state.
Governor Aliyu emphasized that the uncertainty regarding the status of local government secretaries has been resolved by the law, categorizing them as political office holders.
“It is now clear that you are occupying political offices, therefore, if you are a civil servant make sure you resign.
“We believe in the rule of law and will not accept any situation where by people will flout the law,”he added.
Aliyu, through his spokesperson Abubakar Bawa, additionally mandated Local Government Sole Administrators to conduct frequent security meetings involving pertinent stakeholders. The aim is to address and curb banditry as well as other criminal activities within the State.
He added, “Securing our community is not only the responsibility of governments but the responsibility of all of us.”
The governor urged the Sole Administrators to ensure inclusive participation in addressing security concerns for optimal results.
Additionally, he tasked them with staying vigilant and promptly reporting any suspicious individuals to the appropriate authorities for immediate action.
Dr. Aliyu emphasized the importance of robust surveillance and intelligence gathering in rural areas as a strategic approach to combatting insecurity within the State.
Furthermore, he reassured the public of his administration’s preparedness to combat banditry and other criminal activities.
Expressing gratitude, he thanked the State’s populace for their unwavering support towards his administration.
