The Sokoto State Government is currently building a military base in Illela town as part of its strategy to bolster military operations aimed at curbing banditry and other criminal activities in the region.
This was disclosed by the Economic Adviser to the state governor, Dr. Bashir Achida, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Friday.
Dr. Achida emphasized that the military base, once completed, will be transferred to the federal government in accordance with constitutional provisions that place the armed forces under the exclusive authority of the federal administration.
This initiative, according to him, is part of the state’s comprehensive efforts to address the growing security challenges not only in Sokoto but across the northwest region and Nigeria at large.
He further explained that ensuring the safety of citizens is vital due to the state’s significance in agriculture and its contribution to the nation’s economy.
Achida noted that, with an improved security landscape, Sokoto State is poised to play a larger role in national efforts to alleviate poverty and address food insecurity.
“The strategic location of the state as a major agrarian hub, coupled with its proximity to an international border, makes it particularly susceptible to the activities of bandits and other criminal elements,” said Achida.
To enhance security operations, the state government has already deployed 140 operational vehicles to assist security agencies in patrolling communities and protecting farmlands.
In addition, major road construction projects are underway to improve access to rural areas, further aiding military mobility in combating terrorism and banditry.
Achida also highlighted that the local community guards established by the state have been equipped with 700 motorcycles and 40 Hilux vehicles.
This provision, he added, is intended to support the military and other law enforcement agencies in their collective efforts to restore peace and order throughout the state.
