At least six people were killed in a suspected cult clash at Ifite-Awka, near the Nnamdi Azikiwe University gate, Anambra State, in the early hours of Thursday.
Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen believed to be members of a cult group, stormed the area and opened fire on rival cult members, causing widespread panic.
According to The PUNCH, a student who witnessed the incident, the attack took place around 9:30 am along Ifite Amansea Road, near Witness Garden.
“Over six persons were shot dead,” the witness recounted. “The attackers were targeting members of a rival cult group. One of our lecturers saw bodies on the ground and had to turn back.”
The spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident. “The police team responded swiftly to the scene of the shooting around 9:15 am today at Ifite, behind UNIZIK gate.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the gunmen, without provocation, started shooting indiscriminately. Sadly, bullets fatally struck four people, and they were rushed to the hospital by police operatives.”
He added that several bullet shells had been recovered at the scene, and police operations were ongoing to restore calm in the area. “Further details will be provided as investigations continue,” Ikenga said.
This latest attack has left the university community in shock, with students and staff fearing for their safety as authorities work to identify those responsible for the violence.
