Serie A has announced that referees will explain VAR decisions to both fans in the stadium and those watching from home during the Italian Cup semi-finals and final.
As part of a new initiative, officials in the two-legged semi-finals, which include a highly anticipated Milan derby, and the final in May will test audio technology that allows them to communicate their decisions.
However, referees will only use this system to clarify calls made after on-field reviews, where they check their initial ruling on a pitch-side monitor following a prompt from the VAR control room.
Additionally, starting this weekend, Serie A matches will introduce “VARDict,” a feature that “informs fans via the big screens at stadiums of a decision being revised by VAR or long VAR check.”
