A devastating train collision in the eastern state of Odisha, India, has resulted in the loss of at least 30 lives, with numerous others sustaining injuries, according to local authorities.
The incident occurred in the Balasore district, prompting the immediate dispatch of nearly 50 ambulances to the scene, as reported by the state’s chief secretary, Pradeep Jena.
The collision involved two passenger trains and a goods train, creating a chaotic and harrowing scene of destruction. The exact cause of the accident, however, remains unknown at this time.
Prime Minister, Narendra Modi expressed his distress over the incident, extending his heartfelt condolences to the grieving families.
In a tweet, he stated, “Rescue operations are underway at the site of the mishap, and all possible assistance is being given to those affected.”
The gravity of the situation was acknowledged by Home Minister Amit Shah, who described the incident as “deeply agonizing.”
The government is actively engaged in rescue efforts and providing support to those impacted by the tragedy.
Among the trains involved in the collision was the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express, as confirmed by officials.
A senior fire service official, Sudhanshu Sarangi, informed local broadcaster NDTV that the death toll has reached at least 30, adding that the number may increase as the situation unfolds.
