Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has asked Idowu Owohunwa, the city’s police commissioner, to undertake a thorough investigation into the Akere fire incident and identify those responsible.
According to Daily Post, on Wednesday, Sanwo-Olu went to the scene of the midnight fire that burned millions of naira’s worth of products and property at the Akere Auto Spare Part Market in Olodi Apapa, a local government area in the state’s Ajeromi Ifelodun.
When the Governor visited with the victims of the fire, he expressed his sympathy and promised to help the traders make up for their loss.
One security guard was killed and the market was set on fire after unknown assailants allegedly opened fire randomly toward the market.
Sanwo-Olu criticized the provocative conduct, calling it “unfortunate,” and ordered the police commissioner to ensure a thorough investigation to identify those responsible.
He expressed his condolences to the deceased’s family and pledged support for the funeral.
“I sympathize with the family of the cab driver who was somewhere near the market premises but lost his life in the incident,” the governor stated.
“I’m also here to express my sorrow to every store owner who lost their source of income due to this fire. But before the investigation, we don’t want to make any judgments.
“In strong terms, I’m ordering the Commissioner of Police to begin a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading up to this tragedy.
I’m also giving the commissioner the order to increase security around markets in light of the problems we’re hearing about. All exposed markets need to be safeguarded.
“We have the list of all the impacted store owners, and we will review the list to provide compensation to assist the victims in getting back on their feet.” he concluded.
