Samsung Electronics has announced the passing of its co-CEO, Han Jong-Hee, who died of cardiac arrest on Tuesday at the age of 63.
A spokesperson for the South Korean tech giant confirmed the news.
Born in 1962, Han played a pivotal role in overseeing Samsung’s consumer electronics and mobile devices divisions since 2022.
That same year, he was appointed vice chairman and co-CEO, sharing leadership responsibilities with Jun Young-Hyun, who currently heads the company’s semiconductor business.
In an internal message obtained by CNN, Samsung honored Han’s legacy, highlighting his 37-year commitment to the company, particularly his contributions to making Samsung’s TV business a global leader.
The company also acknowledged his efforts in driving growth despite economic challenges.
“Our deepest condolences are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time,” the message stated.
Samsung has yet to announce Han’s successor, the spokesperson noted.
Just last week, Han chaired the company’s annual investor meeting, where he addressed concerns about Samsung’s stock performance.
He also cautioned that 2025 could be a tough year due to economic uncertainties in major markets, as reported by Reuters. However, he reaffirmed Samsung’s commitment to pursuing “meaningful” mergers and acquisitions this year to fuel growth.
“There are some difficulties in doing semiconductor M&As due to regulatory issues and various national interests, but we’re determined to produce some tangible results this year,” he said.
Han, who earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Inha University, joined Samsung in 1988.
Before leading the electronics and devices division, he was responsible for overseeing the company’s display operations.
