The Federal Road Safety Corps has revealed that 412 people were killed in recorded road accidents in Lagos State between January and October.
According to The News Agency of Nigeria, this was disclosed by the Acting Corps Marshal, of the FRSC, Deputy Corps Marshal Dauda Biu, on Tuesday during the 2022 World Day Remembrance For Road Victims.
Biu, who was represented by the Lagos Corps Commander, FRSC, Mr Olusegun Ogungbemide, said that 412 people had been killed and 522 seriously injured in 520 reported cases of road traffic crashes recorded in Lagos State in the 10 months.
According to him, investigations in Lagos found that the primary proximate causes of the majority of crashes were excessive speeding, equipment malfunctions, loss of control, fatigue, and aggressive driving
“It is apposite to say that Lagos-Ibadan and Lekki-Epe-Ijebu-Ode Expressway recorded the highest fatalities during the period with unfortunate revelations that these crashes occurred along the good stretches of the road and at night,”Biu said.
He claimed that in the quest for better, safer roads, attitude change was crucial.
The Acting Corps Marshal stated that institutional levels of cooperation were required to combat the epidemic known as Road Traffic Crash.
He claimed that every road user should prioritize their own responsibility and self-accountability while driving.
The Acting Corps Marshal reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to the objective of improving the nation’s driving conditions.
He pleaded for Nigerians’ ongoing assistance and referred to achieving road safety as a shared responsibility.
