The Nigerian House of Representatives has instructed the Nigerian Communications Commission to ensure that all pornographic websites are blocked across the country.
Lawmakers also mandated internet service providers to enforce the directive immediately.
The resolution was passed following a motion sponsored by Dalhatu Tafoki, a lawmaker from Katsina State representing the All Progressives Congress.
Tafoki expressed concerns over the increasing accessibility of pornography in Nigeria, describing it as a growing global issue.
He argued that Nigeria, as a “highly religious country,” had not taken sufficient steps to curb the spread of explicit content online, despite major faiths opposing nudity and obscenity.
“Several countries across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East have enacted laws banning pornography. Nigeria should not be left behind in protecting its citizens from its harmful effects,” Tafoki stated.
The lawmaker also cited expert opinions on the dangers of pornography, warning that exposure to explicit material could lead to social and psychological issues.
“Renowned psychologists and sociologists around the world have issued stern warnings on the psychological, sociological, and mental consequences of viewing pornographic content,” he added.
Following a voice vote, Speaker of the House Tajudeen Abbas confirmed the motion had been adopted. Lawmakers further instructed the NCC to impose penalties on ISPs that fail to comply with the directive.
