The Redeemed Christian Church of God announced the suspension of two of its ministers, Pastor Ayorinde AdeBello and Deacon Oke Mayowa, in light of serious allegations of homosexuality.
This decision was outlined in an internal memo dated October 28, 2024, which was signed by the RCCG National Overseer, Pastor Sunday Akande.
The announcement underscores RCCG’s strong adherence to biblical teachings, a stance the church has consistently prioritized over its decades of existence.
In the memo, Pastor Akande notified the church’s Special Assistant to the General Overseer for Administration about the suspension of the ministers.
The suspension is described as temporary and a “precautionary measure” as the church initiates a formal inquiry into the allegations. “Our mission is deeply rooted in the teachings of the Bible, and we must address these allegations with the seriousness they deserve,” Akande stated, reflecting the RCCG’s unwavering commitment to uphold what it views as biblical principles.
The memo further emphasizes RCCG’s doctrinal stance on homosexuality, drawing on scriptural references such as Leviticus 18:22, which describes same-sex relations as an “abomination,” and 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, which warns against the “unrighteous” who will not “inherit the kingdom of God.” “For RCCG, adhering to these principles is seen as a core part of its mission,” Akande noted, reaffirming that the church’s doctrines guide its approach to moral and ethical issues.
Akande instructed that a confidential and respectful investigation be conducted, with the Special Assistant to the General Overseer tasked with ensuring that the process is thorough and unbiased.
He also directed that AdeBello, Mayowa, and any others involved in the allegations abstain from participating in any church-related activities during the investigation period.
The church leadership has requested that the inquiry be completed within two weeks to reach a resolution promptly.
“This is a matter of integrity and adherence to our values,” Pastor Akande affirmed, highlighting that the suspension serves to protect the integrity of RCCG’s principles and beliefs.
He also underscored the importance of handling the case delicately, as the outcome may shape RCCG’s approach to similar issues in the future.
RCCG, one of Nigeria’s largest and most influential Christian denominations, has faced several doctrinal challenges over the years, but has maintained a strict adherence to its interpretation of biblical morality.
The handling of this matter is expected to serve as a strong message to the church’s global membership, reinforcing RCCG’s dedication to its foundational doctrines amid the complexities of contemporary society.
