The Police Service Commission has put on hold the promotions of eight commissioners of police to the position of assistant inspectors general and eleven deputy commissioners of police to the next rank of commissioner as result of their inability to show up for the required promotion interview.
However, LEADERSHIP NEWS has reported that three assistant inspectors general of police have now been promoted to the position of deputy inspectors general of police with the approval of the Commission.
The 8 officers who were not promoted had received invitations from the commission to appear before it for the customary discussion to determine their qualification and competency for the new roles, but they did not.
The 3 DIGs who represented the North Central, North East, and North West geopolitical zones retired, leaving vacant duty postings that the new DIGs are anticipated to fill.
The Force Secretary, AIG Hafiz Mohammed Inuwa, will take over for former DIG Mustapha Dan- Daura in the North West position since Dan- Daura retired on January 15 of this year.
AIG Adeleke Adeyinka Bode of North Central will replace DIG Sanusi Lemu, who retired on the 31st of January this year, while AIG Aji Ali Janga of the North East will replace DIG Zanna Mohammed Ibrahim, who retired on the 26th of November 2022.
A PSC spokesperson, Ikechukwu Ani, stated that the acceptance of the new DIGs’ appointments has also secured the continuation of the Nigeria Police’s established succession plan.
He added that the new appointments were made in accordance with the conclusions of the commission’s 18th plenary meeting, which was held in Abuja on February 2-4, 2023, and presided over by acting chairman Justice Clara Bata Ogunbiyi (ret.).
The commission also approved the promotion of 301 superintendents of police to chief superintendents, 17 chief superintendents of police to assistant commissioners, and 10 assistant commissioners of police to deputy commissioners.
While 665 assistant superintendents of police were promoted to deputy superintendents of police, 47 skipped deputy superintendents of police from prior recommendations to the commission were also promoted to superintendents of police.
After being cleared of any outstanding disciplinary issues, the recommendations for ACP Nwamanna Nelson, SP Iliyas Casmir, and SP Alheri Mamman were also approved, and the officers were promoted to their next ranks.
With Nigeria’s upcoming elections for new leaders, Justice Ogunbiyi urged the newly promoted officers to give their all in the service of their country.
