Pope Francis is set to make his first public appearance on Sunday since being hospitalized, offering a blessing and a wave from a window at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.
The 88-year-old pontiff, who was admitted on February 14, has been battling pneumonia in both lungs following breathing difficulties.
A statement from the Vatican on Saturday, said, “Pope Francis intends to wave and offer a blessing from the Agostino Gemelli hospital in Rome after Angelus prayers.”
The pope has shown signs of recovery, no longer requiring an oxygen mask. After experiencing severe breathing issues earlier, his condition has improved, with the Vatican confirming on Monday that he has been able to breathe unaided for short periods.
Throughout his hospitalization, including its critical phases, the Vatican has provided daily updates on his health.
Francis, who had part of one lung removed in his youth, has remained under close medical supervision.
His prolonged stay in the hospital has sparked discussions about who may take charge of key religious observances in the lead-up to Easter, the most sacred season in the Christian faith.
