The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a police inspector from its Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad following the alleged murder of renowned traditional musician Okezie Mba, popularly known as Igbo-Jah.
The incident reportedly took place at the squad’s headquarters on Friday night.
According to The PUNCH, the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, reported that the shooting occurred around 8:10 p.m. on October 25, 2024, as Mba was departing the squad headquarters after a friendly visit.
“For reasons yet to be ascertained, the police officer fired his rifle, hitting the victim,” Ndukwe stated. Mba was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, and his body has since been taken to the mortuary for autopsy.
Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has directed a full investigation into the incident, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police overseeing the State Criminal Investigation Department.
“The Commissioner of Police has ordered a full-scale investigation that will lead to prompt and appropriate disciplinary actions against the officer involved,” Ndukwe noted.
In expressing condolences, Uzuegbu described the event as “unacceptable” and reassured the public that justice would be pursued. “The officer responsible will face the law, along with any other individuals found culpable. This incident is deeply troubling, and we will ensure accountability,” he stated.
Uzuegbu also called on Mba’s family, friends, and fans to remain calm and cooperate with authorities in the investigation.
“We understand the distress this has caused and are committed to ensuring justice is served,” he added.
