The Warri Area Commander of the Nigeria Police, Mr. Imade Graham, has cautioned vigilantes operating in Warri and environs against using excessive force on civilians.
According to The PUNCH, the Warri Area Commander of the Nigeria Police, Mr. Imade Graham, gave the warning while addressing members of the Warri Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists on Friday.
The police boss who called for synergy and collaboration with the NUJ in ensuring sanity in Delta communities disclosed that vigilantes in Warri and its environs are to undergo “necessary orientation on community policing to inject sanity into their operations.”
“We will not tolerate any form of brutality or harassment by vigilantes,” Graham said. “They must operate within the bounds of the law and respect human rights.”
Graham commended the vigilantes for their efforts in curbing insecurity but emphasized the need for them to undergo orientation on community policing to ensure sanity in their operations.
“We will conduct orientation for them to ensure they understand their roles and limitations,” he said. “They are not expected to set up roadblocks or operate without police presence.”
Graham attributed the recent drop in crime statistics in Warri to proactive policing and assured that the command is prepared to ensure safety during the Ember months.
“We have set up an operation order to tackle any security challenges that may arise,” he said. “We will work tirelessly to ensure peace and security in Warri and its environs.”
