The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has cautioned that any disruption of law and order under the guise of a protest will not be tolerated in the Nation’s capital.
In a statement shared on X, FCT Police Spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, emphasized that while protesting is a lawful right, it is crucial for organizers to inform the police.
She noted that this will ensure they receive appropriate protection and that the protest is not overtaken by individuals with ulterior motives.
Adeh mentioned that that the command is not obstructing any residents from staging protests.
“The FCT police command is not preventing any residents in the territory from protesting.
“It is your lawful right to protest but please carry us along so we can provide you with adequate protection and prevent the protest from being hijacked by those with inordinate motives.
“A breakdown of law and order in the name of protest will not be condoned in the FCT,” the PPRO stated.
This comes as states nationwide brace for a proposed 10-day hunger and hardship protest, concerns are mounting.
The protest, driven by anonymous Nigerian youths, aims to highlight the worsening conditions faced by citizens and attract the attention of federal and state governments.
Reports indicated that state governors and security agencies are uneasy about the planned demonstration, urging for dialogue with the government at all levels.
The protest is scheduled to take place from August 1 to August 10, 2024.
In light of the loss and destruction experienced during the #EndSARS protests, governors and other stakeholders have requested that the organizers reconsider their plan, noting that the issues they raise are already being addressed.
On Thursday, the federal government acknowledged awareness of the hunger rally plan, stating, “The identities of many of the brains behind the protest are known, along with their collaborators who are safely residing abroad, and the government is taking necessary actions to stop their subversive plans.”
