The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has announced plans to begin strict enforcement of the third-party insurance policy for vehicle owners starting February 1, 2025.
In a statement released in Uyo on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, explained that the move aligns with directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun.
The enforcement also complies with Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Section 312 of the 1945 Motor Vehicle Third-Party Insurance Act.
John emphasized that the policy is a legal obligation for all private vehicle owners operating on public roads, aiming to enhance accountability, protect road users, and promote adherence to traffic regulations.
“From February 1, any vehicle without valid third-party insurance will be impounded and taken to the nearest police station,” she said. “The vehicle will only be released after presenting valid insurance documents.”
She further warned officers involved in the enforcement to maintain professionalism and refrain from engaging in unethical practices, particularly extortion.
Third-party insurance, a mandatory policy, covers legal liabilities arising from accidents involving injury, death, or property damage to others. However, it does not provide coverage for the vehicle owner’s damages or injuries.
