The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has initiated a crackdown on vehicles lacking plate numbers, responding to escalating security concerns in Abuja.
Spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, in a statement, conveyed that FCT Commissioner of Police Bennett Igweh expressed regret over the frequent sight of motorists driving within the territory with either single or no number plates, including car dealers operating beyond the designated hours of 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
This practice violates Section 25 (5) of the Federal Capital Territory Road Transport Regulation Act, 2005.
“It is no news that several recorded cases of armed robbery, popularly known as “one chance,” are mostly associated with vehicles with single or no number plates. This unlawful act has pricked the attention of the populace, who have now begun to question the effectiveness of the police in addressing the menace,” the statement explained further.
In response, the FCT Police Commissioner has directed his officers to impound any vehicles on the roads with single or no number plates, arrest the drivers, and ensure their prosecution.
He equally cautioned car dealers against parking their vehicles in unauthorized areas and warned that vehicles without plates seen driving after 6:00 PM would face strict legal consequences.
