The Imo State Police Command’s anti-kidnapping Unit has dismantled a suspected terrorist camp linked to the Indigenous People of Biafra and its Eastern Security Network in Nempi, Oru West Local Government Area, arresting 29 individuals.
According to The PUNCH, the Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, the operation was said to have followed the arrest of a key suspect, Anukuru Nnana Emmanuel, a 25-year-old man, in Mgbidi.
Emmanuel’s confession reportedly led police operatives to the camp, which was subsequently raided and disbanded.
“The successful operation resulted in the arrest of 25 males and 4 females suspected to be part of the IPOB/ESN group,” Okoye revealed.
He also listed weapons and other items recovered at the camp, including four pump-action guns, two locally made revolvers, five locally fabricated pistols, three AK-47 magazines, and 20 rounds of live cartridges.
Additionally, a Point of Sale machine, believed to have been used in extortion activities, was recovered, along with a white SUV, local bulletproof charms, and 200,000 naira in cash. The police believe the money was extorted from victims of kidnapping.
Okoye emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting that “these findings underscore the persistent threat posed by these groups in the state.”
He added that investigations are ongoing, with efforts focused on tracking down those responsible for manufacturing the locally made firearms.
“The dislodgement of this camp is part of the Command’s ongoing efforts to combat violent crimes and restore peace within the state,” Okoye said. The Police Command urged residents to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities, reaffirming their commitment to public safety.
The Imo State Police Command continues to pursue all criminal elements in the state, determined to curb the activities of violent groups and restore peace.
