The Anambra State Police Command announced the successful raid of a camp associated with the Indigenous People of Biafra and the Eastern Security Network in Ufuma, located in Orumba North Local Government Area.
According to The PUNCH, in a statement released on Tuesday, the Spokesperson for State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, revealed that four individuals were apprehended during the operation.
Ikenga explained that the Police-led Joint Security Force in Aguata launched the operation based on intelligence regarding planned attacks by the notorious group on security personnel and civilians.
He said, “The Police-led Joint Security Force in Aguata on 17/6/2024 intercepted four suspected ESN militia in Ufuma, Orumba North LGA in Anambra State. The arrest is following information received over time of planned attacks on security agents and innocent citizens by the dreaded group.”
Among those arrested was Maduabuchi Nwafor, also known as Omenkpo, a 32-year-old native of Ufuma. Nwafor has been identified as a native doctor who crafts charms for the group and uses his shrine for initiations and meetings.
One of the suspects, whose name remains undisclosed, has been cooperating with the police.
This individual admitted to being part of the gunmen assigned to enforce the illegal sit-at-home order on May 30, 2024.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnaghe Itam, has directed that the investigation be expanded to uncover additional insurgent hideouts.
He reassured the citizens of Anambra that the police force is dedicated to serving the community and protecting the anonymity of informers to ensure their safety.
