The Kwara State Police Command has confirmed the death of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a 21-year-old student of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, who was allegedly killed during a protest over the recent fuel price hike.
According to The PUNCH, the tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, in the Fate area of Ilorin.
Qoyum, a second-year National Diploma student of Electrical/Electronics Engineering, reportedly died under mysterious circumstances, allegedly involving members of the police force.
In a statement released on Sunday by DSP Ejire-Adeyemi Toun, the Police Public Relations Officer, the police extended their condolences to the family of the deceased and promised a thorough investigation.
“The Kwara State Police Command extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola during this painful and trying time. We deeply sympathize with his family, friends, and all those affected by this tragic event,” the statement read.
The police assured the public that a full-scale investigation has been initiated, with witnesses and key actors identified. “Our commitment to transparency in this investigation is unwavering. We pledge to conduct the process with utmost integrity, leaving no room for doubt or compromise,” the police added.
In response to the incident, students of Kwara State Polytechnic, led by their Students’ Union President, Olalekan Isola, and the National President of the National Association of Kwara State Students, Abdulwahab Arewa, marched to the state police headquarters to demand justice for Qoyum’s death.
The student union emphasized the importance of thorough investigation and accountability.
According to a statement from the students’ union, Abdulqoyyum was allegedly pursued by a police officer to an enclosed area in the Fate neighborhood.
The exact events remain unclear, but Qoyum was found with a serious wound on one of his arms. He was rushed to the Kwara State General Hospital, where he died due to excessive blood loss.
“Our discussions with the police authorities have been productive, and we are working closely with the polytechnic management to investigate the matter thoroughly,” the student union stated.
The polytechnic’s Rector, Engr. Abdul-Jimoh Muhammed, expressed his sorrow over the student’s death, calling the situation deeply distressing. In a statement issued by the school’s spokesperson, Mrs. Halimat Garba, the institution reiterated its commitment to seeking justice.
“The circumstances surrounding this young and promising student’s death are still unclear, as various narratives have emerged. However, the school management is committed to ensuring that justice is served once the final investigation is concluded,” the statement read.
The Rector commended the students for their calm response, noting that while the investigation continues, the institution stands firm in its demand for accountability and justice for Qoyum.
