The Ogun State Police Command has launched an investigation into a fatal road accident that claimed one life and left six others injured near Ajobo village along the Abeokuta-Ibadan Road.
According to The PUNCH, the crash, which occurred around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, involved a Lexus ES 350 driven by 26-year-old Abiodun Michael of Isolu, FUNAAB Road, Abeokuta, and an Opel Zafira 1.8 Space Wagon driven by 55-year-old Popoola Ishola Kayode, a resident of Odeda. Kayode died at the scene.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Wednesday, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, CSP Omolola Odutola, said preliminary findings pointed to reckless driving.
“Eyewitnesses reported that the Lexus driver was moving at high speed while heading towards Abeokuta. While negotiating a sharp bend, he failed to slow down, lost control, and veered off his lane, colliding head-on with the Zafira on the driver’s side,” Odutola said.
The impact of the crash was fatal for Kayode, who died instantly, while six passengers suffered varying degrees of injuries.
Odutola noted that upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer of Odeda deployed traffic officers and patrol teams to secure the scene and assist victims.
“The injured were immediately taken to the General Hospital in Odeda for medical attention. Those with severe fractures were later transferred to FMC Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, for specialized treatment,” she stated.
However, Michael and other occupants of the Lexus abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene after the accident.
“The command is intensifying efforts to track down the fleeing driver and ensure he faces justice,” Odutola added.
The police have urged anyone with information on Michael’s whereabouts to come forward to aid the investigation.
“We are committed to enforcing road safety regulations and ensuring reckless drivers are held accountable,” Odutola assured.
The command also reiterated its warning to motorists to adhere to traffic rules to prevent avoidable tragedies.
