The Ogun State Police Command has launched a manhunt for a truck driver who killed three automobile technicians in the Kemta area of Abeokuta on Wednesday.
Confirming the incident on Friday, the State Police Command’s Spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, told journalists that the driver fled immediately after the accident and remains at large.
The News Agency of Nigeria reported that several automobile technicians from the Ajebo Mechanic Village protested the death of their colleagues on Thursday.
The aggrieved technicians, under the Nigeria Automobile Technicians Association, barricaded the Ajebo/OGTV road, vowing to prevent trucks from using the route until concrete action is taken.
Odutola assured NAN that the police are making efforts to apprehend the runaway driver.
“The driver is at large. The technicians are aware of the whole issue that he has not been arrested. The truck is in the police station,” she said.
According to her, police representatives have held extensive discussions with truck owners, technicians, and relatives of the victims in connection with the tragedy.
In a separate interview, Chairman of Ajebo Mechanic Village, Saheed Arulogun, confirmed that the driver was still at large.
He disclosed that the truck owners were working to ensure the bodies of the deceased are released to their families for burial.
“They also said there will be a meeting to compensate the families of the deceased. There will be a meeting that will involve all parties by 4:00 pm today. We will know the next step after the meeting,” Arulogun added.
