A tragic event occurred in Lagos on Monday when a dispute between two relatives intensified, leading to one cousin fatally stabbing the other during a confrontation.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed that the the suspect who fatally stabbed his cousin during the altercation is currently on the run.
Spokesperson for the State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the event in a brief statement to The PUNCH.
He explained that the police were alerted by a woman who reported that her son, Ganiyu Ibrahim, and her nephew, Afeez Akeem, had gotten into a heated dispute.
The misunderstanding, which quickly spiraled into physical violence, took place at around 7 a.m.
During the confrontation, Ganiyu allegedly broke a bottle and stabbed Afeez in the chest, specifically on the left side.
Despite efforts to save his life, Afeez was pronounced dead at the hospital by the attending doctor.
“The victim was rushed to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty. A team of detectives was immediately mobilized to the scene, and photographs were taken,” Hundeyin said in his statement.
The victim’s family, adhering to Islamic traditions, opted against an autopsy and proceeded to bury Akeem.
The police, however, continue their search for Ganiyu, who fled the scene following the incident.
“The suspect is at large. Investigation is ongoing, and efforts are being made to apprehend the fleeing suspect,” Hundeyin added.
This tragic incident is the latest in a series of violent family disputes reported in Lagos in 2024. Just earlier in October, another fatal family altercation occurred when 25-year-old Chibunma Chimelie was accused of stabbing his 68-year-old father to death.
As Hundeyin reported to the News Agency of Nigeria on October 4, the incident took place around 10:00 p.m. in the Isolo area, with the suspect’s brother notifying the Aswani Police Divisional Station.
