Security operatives in Rivers State successfully thwarted an attempt by individuals dressed in police uniforms to infiltrate the office of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission in the early hours of Friday.
According to The PUNCH, the incident occurred around 1 a.m., when the group allegedly attempted to breach the gates of the commission in an effort to access sensitive electoral materials intended for Saturday’s local government elections.
A source, who witnessed the event but requested anonymity due to lack of authorization to speak on the matter, stated, “The attempt was disrupted when alert security personnel quickly informed senior officers of the commission and relevant government officials.” The source added that Governor Siminalayi Fubara was immediately notified.
Governor Fubara reportedly led a delegation, including members of the National and State Assemblies, political leaders, and other top government officials, to the RSIEC office located on Aba Road, Port Harcourt, where the situation was assessed.
Addressing journalists at the scene, Governor Fubara denounced the incident and praised the security operatives for their vigilance.
“This attempt to undermine the integrity of our election process is unacceptable. I commend the security personnel for their swift and decisive action,” he said.
The governor also emphasized the importance of respecting the autonomy of the state’s electoral process. “Local government elections are a state affair. Those trying to disrupt this process should allow the state to conduct its affairs without interference,” he added.
Meanwhile, it was observed that several government officials, political stakeholders, and supporters are currently keeping vigil at the RSIEC office to ensure the security of the premises ahead of the elections.
The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, is yet to respond on the development.
