The Niger State Police Command has reported the discovery of the lifeless body of a newborn baby, believed to be just a day old, found in a farmland located in Tayi village, Minna, Niger State.
The disclosure was made by the Spokesperson for the State Police Command, SP Waisu Abiodun, during a briefing with the News Agency of Nigeria in Minna on Tuesday.
Abiodun explained that the GRA Police Division received a report on August 9, indicating that the body of a “day-old child” had been discovered in the farmland in Tayi village, Minna.
Police operatives from the GRA Division promptly responded to the scene and called on welfare officials from Chanchaga Local Government Area for assistance. The welfare team brought a medical practitioner to examine the infant, who confirmed that the child was deceased.
Abiodun noted that the incident is currently under investigation, with the police working closely with the local community to apprehend those responsible for the crime.
A resident of the area, who spoke to NAN under the condition of anonymity, speculated that the child might have been abandoned by a woman who had an out-of-wedlock pregnancy.
“The person must have abandoned the baby while still alive, but due to severe exposure to cold, the baby died,” the resident remarked.
“This is the first time we are seeing such an occurrence in our area,” he added.
