An inspector from the Imo State Police Command identified as Isong Osudueh, faced demotion after a viral video showed him allegedly extorting motorists along the Onitsha express road.
Spokesperson for the State Police Command, Henry Okoye, who disclosed this in a statement confirmed that Osudueh has been recommended for a reduction in rank.
The officer was captured collecting money from drivers and even providing change when necessary.
State Police Commissioner, Aboki Danjuma, stated that the inspector will undergo an orderly room trial before further disciplinary actions are taken.
The supervisory officer has also been issued a query in connection with the incident.
“The erring officer, identified as Inspector Isong Osudueh, attached to the Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU), Owerri, has been recommended for a reduction in rank after the necessary orderly room proceedings, for exhibiting such a shameful and unprofessional act, while the supervisory officer has been issued an official query for lack of supervision,” the statement read.
“The disciplinary actions taken against the erring officer underscore the Command’s unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, transparency, and integrity among its personnel, while effectively discharging its lawful duties and entrenching public trust and confidence,” it added.
The CP issued a stern warning, stating that under his watch, the command will not tolerate any form of extortion or misconduct by its personnel.
He further cautioned that supervisors failing in their oversight duties will face severe sanctions.
This statement comes in the wake of recent actions by the Nigeria Police Force, where an inspector was dismissed for allegedly stealing N29.8 million, and three officers were demoted for extortion in the Federal Capital Territory on May 17.
