The Police Council has approved the appointment of Kayode Egbetokun as the substantive Inspector-General of Police.
He was the acting IGP since June 20, 2023, when he replaced Usman Alkali Baba.
The Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Geidam, announced this to journalists after a meeting of the council chaired by President Bola Tinubu at the presidential villa on Tuesday.
Geidam said Egbetokun had performed well in his acting capacity and had presented a plan to improve the security situation in the country. He said the council was satisfied with his credentials and experience.
Egbetokun, who is a mathematician and a PhD holder in Peace and Security Studies, has served in various commands and positions in the police force. He was once the chief security officer to Tinubu when he was the governor of Lagos State.
Egbetokun’s appointment comes amid rising insecurity and violence in some parts of the country, especially in the north-east and north-west regions. He has pledged to work with other security agencies and stakeholders to restore peace and order.
