The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the release of three female students who were abducted from Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University of Agriculture, Makurdi.
The students were kidnapped on February 25, 2025, while returning from a night study session on campus.
Their release was confirmed in a news update shared by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday.
Speaking on the development, the spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, (Insert Name if available), stated, “We can confirm that the three students who were kidnapped have regained their freedom. Further details regarding their release will be made available soon.”
Following the abduction, the university management took precautionary measures by declaring a one-week mid-semester break to address security concerns on campus.
This decision was outlined in an internal memo titled “Security Situation on Campus,” issued a day after the incident by the institution’s Registrar, Dr. John David.
The incident sparked widespread concern, with the National Association of Nigerian Students and the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, calling for swift action to ensure the students’ safe return.
Reacting to the news of their release, a representative of NANS, (Insert Name if available), said, “We are relieved that our fellow students have been freed.
However, this incident highlights the urgent need for improved security on our campuses.”
