A State High Court sitting in Asaba, Delta State, on Tuesday, sentenced Nigeria Police Force Inspector, Ubi Ebri, to death for the murder of a phone dealer named Onyeka Ibeh.
Presided over by Justice C.D. Diai, the court found Ebri guilty of killing Ibeh, a well-known phone dealer in Asaba.
According to The PUNCH, the incident occurred on April 5, 2023, when Ibeh and his wife were driving from Ugbolu to Asaba and were stopped for a search by a police team.
After waiting for a prolonged period without being attended to, the couple decided to continue their journey.
Angered by this, Inspector Ebri fired into the vehicle, hitting Ibeh in the head. Ibeh’s wife, who was in the front seat, was unharmed.
The shooting sparked protests by youths in Asaba, who took to the streets and gathered at police headquarters to demand justice for Ibeh.

Director in the Ministry of Justice, E H Edema, spoke to journalists after the verdict, stating, “Today’s judgement is a landmark judgement because justice has been served in this case to the deceased and the society at large.”
Ifeanyi Ibeh, the deceased’s older brother who witnessed the judgement, praised the court for delivering justice to his family.
