The Kano State Police Command has announced significant strides in its fight against crime, arresting 89 suspects involved in various criminal activities.
According to The PUNCH, this was disclosed during a press briefing held at the Command’s Bompal Headquarters on Monday.
Speaking on behalf of the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Salman Dogo Garba, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, detailed the recent achievements, highlighting the arrest of 15 armed robbery suspects, 10 drug dealers, and one human trafficking suspect.
“In addition to the arrests, we were able to rescue two human trafficking victims and two kidnapping victims,” Kiyawa revealed.
He also reported the recovery of illicit drugs, dangerous weapons, and stolen property, including 538 bottles of Bacardi Syrup and a substantial amount of dried leaves, suspected to be Indian hemp.
The Command’s success is attributed to its strategic focus on community engagement and intelligence-led operations, Kiyawa said.
“Our decision to enhance visibility patrols, coupled with active engagement with the public, has contributed greatly to our progress,” he stated, adding that 43 suspects had been charged to court, with investigations ongoing for 46 others.
Recognising the importance of community partnership, Kiyawa said, “We are working closely with stakeholders, including the media, to raise public awareness on safety measures. The support of the Kano State Government and law-abiding citizens has been invaluable.”
In preparation for Nigeria’s Independence Day celebrations on October 1, 2024, the Command reassured residents of their safety.
“We have made arrangements to ensure adequate security during the celebrations,” Kiyawa confirmed, urging residents to cooperate with security agencies and celebrate responsibly.
During the briefing, the police also extended condolences to the families of five police officers who tragically lost their lives in a motor accident on September 23, 2024.
Kiyawa expressed gratitude for the prayers and support shown to the bereaved families and those injured in the accident.
