The Lagos State Police Command has announced the arrest of an officer involved in harassing and extorting over N1 million from corps members in Surulere in the state.
The Command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the development via a post shared on social media, stating that the officers in question have been identified and are currently under interrogation.
Hundeyin noted that the officers belong to the Area C Command in Surulere and that the Area Commander had been informed.
“They are men of Area C, Surulere. The Area Commander has been contacted. The men have been identified. They are being interrogated. However, we need more than a verbal accusation,” he explained.
This investigation followed a public complaint by social media user Olúyẹmí Fásípè, handle @YemieFash, who revealed the extortion on X.
According to the post, “Your officers today in Surulere extorted 1 million naira from 3 corps members. They were threatened with firearms, kidnapped, and taken to Kafaru Oluwole Tinubu House, Area C Police Command of the @LagosPoliceNG, where they were robbed. Their offense was the absence of a physical copy of a driver’s license. This is evil.”
Fásípè further detailed that the officer who collected the money was in mufti and appeared to be their superior.
Hundeyin responded to the allegations, raising questions about the evidence presented. He said, “The spy camera would have captured the exchange of money too, be it cash or transfer. And the spy camera did not pick that part? Or did he switch off the camera to give him One Million Naira? Was the money already in the vehicle, and the police took it? Or one of them went out of the station to get the money and brought it, or they did transfer, which would have receipt? Why is that crucial part missing? I am not doubting. I just want clarity.”
Following this exchange, the accusers provided a transaction receipt to support their claims, adding a layer of evidence to the ongoing investigation.
