The Ekiti State Police Command on Thursday arraigned a 27-year-old man, Yusuf Ali, before the Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court on charges of motorcycle theft and disturbing public peace.
Ali, who has no fixed address, is facing a two-count charge of stealing and breach of peace.
Prosecutor Inspector Akinwale Oriyomi informed the court that the accused, along with accomplices still at large, allegedly committed the crime on September 10 at approximately 10:00 a.m. in the Irona area of Ado-Ekiti.
Oriyomi claimed that Ali and his associates stole a red Bajaj motorcycle, valued at N900,000, from a business identified as Olawhale Empire Multibiz Venture.
In addition to the theft, the prosecutor argued that the actions of Ali and his unidentified collaborators created a public disturbance, which constituted a breach of peace.
The charges brought against Ali are in violation of Sections 302 and 181(d) of the Ekiti State Criminal Law, 2021. Inspector Oriyomi requested that the court grant an adjournment to allow him time to review the case file and gather witnesses.
Ali, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. His defense counsel, Mr. Sunday Balogun, appealed to the court for bail, assuring that his client would appear for future court dates.
Chief Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun granted Ali bail in the sum of N250,000, with the condition that he provides one surety of the same amount.
The case has been adjourned for hearing on October 7.
