Mauricio Pochettino is set to return to Stamford Bridge for an anticipated yet potentially awkward reunion with the fans just 19 days after agreeing to part ways with Chelsea
His exit, framed as a ‘mutual agreement,’ cut short his two-year contract after just one year at the helm.
Despite his departure, Pochettino, 52, is already slated for a return. He will manage the ‘World XI’ team at the Soccer Aid charity event, scheduled for Sunday, June 9, at Chelsea’s stadium.
The event promises to draw a large number of Chelsea supporters, eager to see club legends Eden Hazard and Frank Lampard. This sets the stage for a tense atmosphere as Pochettino reappears on familiar grounds so soon after his exit.
During his final match, a 2-1 victory against Bournemouth, Pochettino did not bid farewell to the fans. Instead, he left Thiago Silva to address the crowd and quickly headed down the tunnel to handle his media obligations. This departure, without a public acknowledgment, added to the criticisms of his perceived detachment from the supporters, an issue that had persisted throughout his tenure.
Although some fans still hold a grudge due to his previous association with rivals Tottenham, Mail Sport reports that the club assured Pochettino of a warm welcome back to Stamford Bridge in the future. There is also the possibility of him visiting the Cobham training ground for a more personal farewell with his players.
As Pochettino prepares for his swift return, the mix of anticipation and unresolved tensions ensures his appearance at Soccer Aid will be closely watched by all.
He could also arrange a visit to their Cobham training ground in the future to say a more fitting farewell to his players.
While speaking in a statement after he was relieved of his duties, Pochettino said, “Thank you to the Chelsea ownership group and sporting directors for the opportunity.
“The club is now well positioned to keep moving forward in the Premier League and Europe in the years to come.”
Pochettino will not return to Stamford Bridge alone; his long-time assistant Jesus Perez will accompany him. Reflecting on his participation, Pochettino commented earlier in 2024, “Soccer Aid for UNICEF is a huge event – and one I am delighted to be part of again.”
“The 2023 match was a great experience to be a part of and that is why I was more than happy to accept a return this year, particularly as it will be at Stamford Bridge and with Frank Lampard, a Chelsea legend, in the opposing dugout for England.
“We raised so much money last year, and I hope we can do the same this time, so please get involved and buy your tickets.
“A sold-out Stamford Bridge generates an incredible atmosphere and we want the players who are part of Soccer Aid 2024 to enjoy that same feeling when they step out on to the pitch on Sunday, June 9.”
