As the rest of the world joins the United Kingdom to mourn Queen Elizabeth II who was buried on Monday at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, United Kingdom, some Nigerian residing in the UK paid tribute to the monarch in style.
Arguably one of the most hilarious but amazing gestures, these individuals, dubbed London aunties, ordered Nigerian-made Queen Elizbeth-themed Ankara designs, known as ‘aso ebi’, and had them cargoed to the UK in time for the queen’s funeral on Monday.
The initiative which reportedly started as a joke was flown from Lagos to London in the space of four days, in time for the queen’s funeral.
According to Owanbe UK, the unnamed group of women began their late queen Aso Ebi celebration initiative as a joke, except that one of them took it seriously.
Recounting the development, Ownabe UK on its Facebook page said, “It started as a joke and one of us took it seriously. The outfits were turned around in four days and delivered from Lagos to London the day before the event.
“It went viral, was on sky news and the Palace has now requested for it to be displayed at the London museum.”
