Several passengers are feared to have died after an unidentified boat capsized on the River Niger.
According to The PUNCH, the event took place early Sunday morning near the Onitsha banks, where bystanders were observed rescuing victims from the river.
A video of the incident is circulating on social media, further affirming the occurrence.
As of the time of reporting, the exact number of casualties remains uncertain, but reports suggest the passengers were traveling from Kogi State.
Anambra State Police spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, assuring that the situation is currently being managed and brought under control.
Ikenga said, “The situation is under control. Our marine operatives, on getting the distress call about the incident, responded swiftly.
“We were able to rescue over 30 of the passengers alive and recovered the five lifeless bodies in the depths of the sea and the capsized boat.
“Preliminary information revealed that the boat was from Kogi State, conveying goods and passengers before the unfortunate incident occurred.
“Meanwhile, the cause is yet to be ascertained as the investigation is ongoing, please.”
