The Pan Niger Delta Forum has announced the death of Chief Edwin Clark, a prominent national leader and respected elder statesman.
He passed away peacefully on Monday evening, February 17, 2025, in Abuja at the age of 97, surrounded by family and loved ones.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, PANDEF’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiuwevbi Ominimini, alongside Professor College Clark and Ambassador Dr. Godknows Igali, National Chairman of PANDEF, confirmed the sad news. They described his death as the fall of a “mighty Iroko tree,” referencing his immense contributions to the country.
“Pa Clark was indeed a towering figure in Nigeria, known for his tireless advocacy for justice and human rights,” the statement read.
Chief Clark, a distinguished lawyer, activist, and politician, was widely regarded as a leader of the South-South region and a key figure in the Ijaw ethnic group.
He was a founding member of PANDEF and co-led the South and Middle Belt Leaders Forum, advocating for justice, equality, and human rights throughout his life.
His career, spanning over 75 years, saw him play vital roles in public service, politics, legal advocacy, and community development. Chief Clark founded several universities, contributing to the educational development of Nigeria.
“His brilliant mind and generous spirit will continue to inspire future generations to strive for a more just and compassionate society,” the statement continued.
Chief Clark’s passing follows closely after the death of his longtime associate, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, marking the end of an era in Nigeria’s political and social landscape.
In comfort, PANDEF quoted the biblical passage from Acts 13:36, stating, “After he had served the purpose of God in his generation, he fell asleep and was allowed to rest.”
